Hi Rajan, What you say is perfectly fair. The phenomenal is the bridge to the real, after all. Whatever floats one's boat is fine. As long as it is floating, of course, and not sinking.

What I mean is, yes, I can understand the concept that eventually one has to give up all this identifying with schools of thought and philosophy in favour of something higher. For me, at the moment, the label sufism is very useful, because before ...

I agree with your analogy between fitness regimes and their purpose compared against the spiritual quest; the parallels that you draw between these endeavours. Your statement regarding the limitations of labels could have come straight out of a bo...

Hi Mike, Don't get me wrong - you may be right about PK. All I'm saying is that I personally keeping an open mind. I have no problem if you think he's not the real deal, and to some extent can understand your reasons for saying that.

Hi Kareana, perhaps you could explain a bit more, it sounds as if you make a differentiation between Love as it is experienced in 'Islamic' Sufism and "other" schools that also identify as Sufism. I’ll try to explain. I belong to a school that d...

Hi Michael, Well...I said too much, but yes, I didn't feel like this book made much of a contribution, for reasons Dr. Kingsley was not aware of then (but which he may have encountered by now), and for reasons of which I think any scholar should ...

hi Michael, Im interested by your comment: I have long suspected that it’s all too easy to get carried away by certain feelings which might be categorised as “spiritual love”, and to associate those feelings with a particular formulation, such a...

Thank you Jane, I will check out this link.

Hi Mike, You don’t seem to have a very high opinion of PK. That’s fine, of course; you are entitled to your opinion! :-) As for myself, I’m just keeping an open mind. He has a set of CDs on his site – the one entitled “Everything” contains detai...

Hi Kareana, what does PK mean by love as a deception? Good question I’m trying to sort out whether he is talking about love as I think Sufis understand it. It may be that he is concentrating on Eros rather than Agape. And it is interesting that ...

Hi Michael, Mike, Rajan and Jane, hmmm thinking about strife, striving and love as deception. Unfortunately for this conversation im not very familiar with the Greek legends or have I read PK, so please forgive me if my ramblings here got the poi...

I have to say that I was not impressed by Kingsley's In the Dark Places of Wisdom. I only managed to get through about 80% of it, and that was hard work. I quit when it became clear to me that he was not going to provide any instruction in incubat...

You may well be right Michael, I had this dream and felt that I should share it with HR as it seemed interesting. I did have my own theories about it, but, they don't seem that significant now. On a different note, following your exchanges with Ja...

Hi Rajan, Quite a dream! You know, I often treat dream interpretation with caution; I think dreams sometimes feed back to us in symbolic form something we have already decided is so in conscious waking life, rather than some absolute representati...

I studied them a lifetime ago and really it doesn't amount to much! 150 lines left of Parmenides and perhaps 500 of Empedocles Actually I think a massive amount of real power could be in as many lines, sometimes less is more, but not really there,...

Well, a bit! I suppose what is interesting is that each brings their own slant to these writings, consciously or unconsciously and reflects their own time and their own tradition. And a change is afoot this time and this tradition is more able to ...

I studied them a lifetime ago and really it doesn't amount to much! 150 lines left of Parmenides and perhaps 500 of Empedocles, its just a couple of pages, really, intriguing though.

Hi Jane, Thanks for your post. One thing that one has to bear in mind is that the translations of Parmenides and Empedocles (according to PK, who is a recognised Greek scholar of the highest order), is that generations of philosophers, starting w...

Heraclitus equates strife with justice, as in the way things are and the way things should be. 'One should knowthat war is common and justice strife and that everything comes aboute in accordance with strife and what must be.' So seeing love and s...

James appears to have deleted Hidden Recess on 9/6/09 (DD/MM/YY). Maybe it was a mistake, and maybe he'll be back, in which case this will be temporary.

I've just recreated the site with the same name and using the standard "Floral" theme that James used previously so it all seems familiar.

Musings on fear

Premise: fear can only exist where there is vulnerability.

Hmm. Some things are definitely vulnerable - such as the body. The mind, too.

Still, we can in some circumstances ignore these seemingly legitimate causes for fear. For example, when protecting the life of a loved one… Continue

meditation as psychotherapy

Is it harmful in the long run for one's spiritual development to use yoga and meditation techniques as psychotherapeutic tools? I have always been tempted to seek out a yoga instructor or meditation advisor to calm my psychological and emotional unbalance, but, been fearful that this may simply treat the superficial 'existential' crisis and create a false sense of well being. The doctors are always Prozac happy and I do not want to go down this route. Is it better, in the long run to persevere wi… Continue

Who am I? What am I doing here? Where am I going?

Let's start with the basics. Can I answer any of these questions?

Er... no, actually. I can make up all sorts of stories: I'm a Blugbatter beast from planet alpha-prime of Proxima centauri; I'm here to observe you strange humans because… Continue
